Siding sizes

What are standard siding sizes?

Width, length and thickness of siding panels, sheets, boards, shingles or shakes define by a manufacturer. There is wide variety of types, styles and textures of siding available on the market and even similar in appearance siding panels from different producers might vary in actual dimensions. Even though there are no standard measurements determined and particular siding has its own unique specifications there still some common sizes depending on a siding type and design.

All numbers in the chart are approximate measurements of typical siding panels, boards and sheets. For exact dimensions check manufacturer specifications of a certain product.

Width and length of siding reflect measurements in inches (imperial units) and centimeters (metric system).

Siding thickness measured in inches with conversions to millimeters.

Coverage is an area in square feet or square meters covered by a single panel.

How heavy the siding is?

Weight of a siding will depend on the material type siding made of and its thickness. One 10” x 12’ vinyl siding panel will weight approximately 4.5 – 4.7 pound (2.04 - 2.13 kilograms). Bevel or lap engineered wood siding is a few times heavier. Each square foot of stone veneer siding weight 8 – 12 lbs. (3.6 - 5.4 kg).

Estimating siding coverage area

While calculating how many siding panels or sheets you need for a house always round to a bigger number and depending on house style and siding design add 10% - 12% for a waste. Theoretically with precise measurements of a house and knowing nominal dimensions of a siding it is possible to calculate waste factor more accurately, but practically no one spend a day just for measuring an exterior square footage with 100% accuracy. If the house has multiple dormers or walls are not simply strait but ending at a certain angles waste will increase. Calculate a soffit and fascia separately accounting actual overhung dimensions.
