Width, length and height of shed defined as actual storage measurements in imperial units (feet) and metric system (meters). Storage capacity is an interior storage space measured in cubic feet (ft3) and cubic meters (m3). All numbers in the chart are approximate measurements and exact sizes will be defined by manufacturers.

Building codes and restrictions

Normally installation or building simple smaller sheds do not require any permits, but law varies not only from state to state, but even between two close cities and can have different rules and regulation. Before planning on constructing any type of a free standing structure on the property always check with your local county of city municipal office for possibility of obtaining permits and approvals. It is very typical that height and overall shed dimensions might be restricted to a certain maximum size. There is a high probability that building permanent foundation or any type of electric work can be prohibited or should be approved by a city inspector.

Roof design

While planning to add an additional storage shed always think about design. Well-built slope or gable roof can be utilized as an extra space for placing garden tools or even temporary storing some outdoor furniture.

Space limitations

Depending on the lot size, it might be impossible to build a big shed on the property because of limited space. In such case, it is always worth to consider lean-to covered storage options.

How heavy the storage shed is

Shipment weight of ready to assemble factory made sheds will be determined by type of materials the storage made from and its actual dimension. Simple 10’ x 8’ galvanized steel shed 8 ft. high will weigh about 230 lb. – 250 lb. (104 kg – 113 kg). 108” x 144” with two windows and 72 x 80 door wood shed excluding flooring and shelves weight over 1,400 pounds (635 kg). 340 cu. ft. resin storage typically lighter than 350 lbs. (159 kg).

Ideal storage shed size

Meeting homeowner’s requirements is the main aspect of perfect size determination. 3’ x 5’ covered storage with 30’ wide door can be a great solution for keeping couple shovels, rake and lawn mower, but for storing oversized household items it might be better to shop for a bigger dimensions shed.
